DIY iPhone Camera Replacement Guide

Follow the step-by-step guide to learn how you can replace your front camera at home.

Remove the Front Glass

To begin replacing your iPhone front camera you must start by removing the front glass of your device. Start by using a small screwdriver to remove the pentalobe screws at the bottom of your mobile phone. If your mobile device has cracks or chips in the screen, use a piece of clear packing tape over the screen to ensure it does not break when being removed. Be sure not to tape over the edge of the screen or it will not be possible to remove the screen in the next step.

Once the pentalobe screws are removed and the screen is taped, you can begin applying heat with a heat gun, hair dryer, or warm compress to loosen the adhesive on the front glass. After the adhesive has been loosened you can use a smudger or opening pick to pry the front glass away from your phone.

After the front glass has been separated from the phone you will need to remove the battery and display connector cover. Once the cover is removed you can disconnect the battery and display cable.

Remove the Display assembly.

You will then need to remove the front sensors to disconnect the entire display assembly. Start by removing the front sensor cover. Once the cover is removed, you can disconnect the front sensors and remove the display assembly.

Remove the front-facing camera.

Now that you have access to the front-facing camera component, you can begin removing it by taking out the screw in the front of the assembly. After the screw has been removed you can remove the front-facing camera bracket that holds the front-facing camera in place. Before removing the entire front-facing camera assembly, you will need to disconnect the face ID cable connectors away from the logic board. These connectors can be moved upward to disconnect.

After you have removed the face ID cable connectors you can remove the front-facing camera assembly. Using a pair of tweezers can make it easier to graph the entire component.

Install New Front Facing Camera

Now that you have removed the broken front-facing camera, you can begin installing the new replacement front camera from Pisen. Place the new front camera and connect the Face ID cable connectors to the new component. Once the cable connectors are put into place, you can reinstall the front-facing camera bracket. Replace the screw to hold it in place.

Next, you will need to replace the display assembly. Begin by connecting the front sensors back onto the display assembly. Once the sensors are in place and reconnected, you can reinstall the front sensor cover and place the display assembly back on the phone.

Once the display assembly is reinstalled, you will need to reinstall your phone screen. Start by reconnecting the screen to the battery and reconnecting the display cable from the screen to the phone.

After you have connected the ribbon cables for the screen, power on the phone to make sure the ribbon connectors are properly connected. If the screen does not turn on, try disconnecting and reconnecting the ribbon connectors until a secure fit is obtained. Power off the phone after testing to complete the repair.

Once you are confident that the ribbon connectors are securely attached, you can apply adhesive around the edge of the screen. Slowly lower the screen into place and apply even pressure to secure the screen. Reinstall the pentalobe screws at the bottom of the phone to secure the screen in place.

Test out the New Camera

Now that your phone is back together, you can power it back on to test that your repair was successful. Make sure that the screen lights up and responds to touch. Open your front-facing camera and make sure that the photo and video quality are clear. Be sure to also test your Face ID feature and make sure that the sensors in your camera are functioning properly. Once you have tested all of the features of your front-facing camera, you can have peace of mind that your repair was a success.
